Ribbon Wreath

Since I have the day off today... I have decided to start my Halloween decorations. Surprisingly, the Dollar Store was short on fun things, so I am going to head to Target later on. I came across this website to make a ribbon wreath. I am going to change it up a little bit and make mine with orange, black, and hot pink ribbon.

Here are the instructions if you are interested in making one too...

Supplies:

12″ foam wreath form
24 yards 1 1/4″ black grosgrain ribbon (or less if using a wider ribbon)
Scissors
Measuring tape

Steps:

Cut 45-50 16″ pieces of ribbon.
Tie one strand of ribbon in a knot around the wreath. I used a “messy knot” — right over left, then right over left again, pulling in the opposite direction. It doesn’t really matter how you do it as long as you are consistent all the way around. Repeat with the knots, pushing them close together, until you fill the wreath.
Cut one long piece of ribbon (48″) and tie one end to form a knot. Leave a long loop for hanging and tie another knot onto the wreath.
Trim any frayed or long ends.

I found a supplier for ribbon here. In order to have enough to make me one and one for my sister, I am getting 60 yards of 1 1/2 ribbon. The prices are so much better when you buy wholesale online! Maybe I will have enough left over for other crafts!

It is amazing at how fast time flies... not only when you are having fun, but when you are busy with work and trying to make a name for yourself in the "adult world." Muffy and I have traveled all over the country for horse shows. It has been a wonderful show season, and we will be settling down for the winter in November. Hopefully, that means that I will have time to start blogging consistently again!

Just a few updates on my life...

Here is a picture of Muffy from a few weeks ago. This was right after her first trip to the pet spa!

I hosted my first dinner party in the new apartment. 3 couples came over and feasted on some delicious food, if I do say so myself! And, of course, I had to have a pink and green table! More info to follow on this party!

I bought my first car... wow! I thought I was going to get a Volvo S60, but when I found out I could get an Audi convertible for the same price, I went for it! Muffy loves riding with the top down!

Still working on decorating the apartment. It is coming along, slowly but surely.

Football season is among us, and I have tried to make it to as many games as possible!

And that is about it! I have truly missed keeping up with you all! I will try to be better about posting :)

My Home Tour

One of my favorite things to do is decorate my apartment with fun new things that I can pick up at garage or estate sale and outlet sales. I thought that for this week's posts, I would fill you in on what I have been doing recently.

Today is a picture of the Dining Room. FREE things is somthing that I cannot turn down, which is what the tablecloth and chair cushions are. My grandmother (who is a decorator) had these in her breakfast room. Even though it isn't my favorite, it does the job for right now and I can find something I like better later on. Something I also had to keep in mind, since I can't paint the walls, the apartment was in desperate need of some color!

The table underneath is a wooden table that I found at a garage sale for $15. It even has 2 leaves that I can use when I am entertaining a larger crowd! The legs on the table look great, but the top wasn't in the best condition, therefore you can see the need for a tablecloth. The price was right and it functions perfectly!

Moving on to my favorite part of the dining room... my antique chairs! They are around 100 years old and are French Country style. I just found these in a really swanky antique mall. Everything in there was WAY out of my price range, except for these. They were originally $800 for the 6 chairs, but they had been marked 30% off. My grandmother made me put them on hold because I think she knew that I couldn't find anything better... well a few days went by and I didn't find anything that I liked. So I called back and offered them $350 for the chairs and they took it!! Don't every be afraid to offer less than what they are asking, especially in this economy!

The plate rack I bought from the Pottery Barn outlet for my first college apartment. It is accentent with plates that I got from Tuesday Morning and Marshall's. Plate racks are fun because it is an inexpensive way to change the look of. When I get a new table cloth, I will switch out the plates and for around $20, you have a totally different wall.

The painting is from my grandmother's attic. I love the monochromatic palate of it. That way I can change out other patterns close by without having to worry about clashing.

My lingerie chest found a new use in this apartment. I will have to add a picture of it later, but it now serves as the main storage piece for tableclothes, napkins, plates, and other entertaining needs. The cool thing about it is it matchs the armoire that is in my living room! Continuity in a small apartment was really important for me.

Last, but not least, is the lighting. Please let me know if you have any ideas. That is the fixture that came with the apartment and will have to be there when I leave. But, for now, I would like to have something that is a little more... up to date? Not sure if that is the best way to put it, but let me know if you can think of anything!

Also, I am thinking about making two ribbon wreaths to hang on either side of the plate rack? Any other ideas for that blank wall would be great!!

Meet Muffy!!

So here is the latest addition to LPW's household. I have been wanting a puppy throughout college, and my mother kept telling me that I couldn't have one until I graduated from college, found a place to live, and had a stable job. Okay, so I managed to accomplish all of those. But, with my hectic work schedule, I have not found time to look for a dog to rescue.

When I arrived in Mississippi, I was thinking that I was not going to be in a rush to get a dog; but give myself plenty of time to get settled and then I would start looking. Keep in mind that at this point, I still was thinking about a black lab or beagle...

So I went to a horse show in Kentucky and everywhere I looked there were Corgis. All of a sudden, I realized I had to have one!! They are perfect around horses, great temperments, good size, and the list could go on and on. So I started asking everyone I saw at the show if they knew of any litters close by or reputable breeders, and no one knew of anything! So I decided that I would just wait and something better would come along.

The next weekend rolled around and I was at a horse show in Nashville. I could not believe it when ONE CORGI PUPPY showed up... I was heartbroken!! I just knew that someone had found a puppy and she was not for sale. But I was wrong! The lady just so happened to be a breeder from Kentucky and brought the ONE PUPPY to sell at the show.

So that night she went home with us to our hotel, so that we could spend time together and see how badly I wanted her. Well of course I was smitten and she rode home with us later on that weekend!

As for naming her, that was the most difficult part of all. I really wanted to name her Lilly but there is already another dog at the barn named that so I was out of luck. We danced around with tons of names and finally I made my sister name her when we were walking into the vet's office to get her shots!

Now Muffy and I spend all of our time together. She even gets to come to work with me :) Her favorite things in life right now are cardboard, flip flops, horse poo (eeww...), playing with other dogs, napping all day, playing hide and seek under my bed, and getting in all kinds of mischief. We have slept through the night once, but other than that we wake mommy up at 4AM to go outside. She is almost completely potty trained!!

When we brought Muffy home 3 weeks ago, she weighed 5.6lbs and was 10 weeks old. Now at 13 weeks, she weighs 8.2lbs. It is a guessing game as to what color she will end up being. The breeder swears that she is going to be sable (which is the reddy-brown), but I think she will stay tri-colored.

Now I just need to find time to go to the Lilly store so she can match mommy in her Lilly!! Aren't the Lilly collars just too cute for words?! I did go to the Vineyard Vines store to get her one of their collars but all of them were too big!! haha! I guess we will have to grow a little more before we can have one of those.

I am back in action!!

Sorry everyone for the delay in posting!! You would not believe how crazy everything has been. There is much to fill you in on, since much has changed in LPW's world.

Graduation just flew by. Dolly Parton was the commencement speaker and she received her honorary docorate degree in music. My parents came in town to celebrate with me and help move the final boxes out of the apartment. Yes... it was sad to say by to my friends of four years, but I knew that it would not be the last time that I saw them. Many of these people I will continue to keep up with for the rest of my life. So on to the next subject...

I made it to Mississippi all in one piece and I absolutely LOVE my small town!! It is the epitome of the southern life :) It is the kind of place with one grocery store, tons of cute little boutiques, and were everyone knows your name. The town square has the main court house for the county and is surronded by banks, offices, restaurants, and shopping. Just too quaint for words! I have just finally started to gets things really settled in the apartment. Pictures of the decorating are to come! It is perfectly functional for the little amount of time that I actually stay there.

Now onto the job front, everything is going great. I travel frequently for work so that is why I have been so behind on the blogging. Things will start to settle down when horse show season winds down (in late fall), so until then we must press on through the heat and get work done! Easier said then done on some days!

Now for the REALLY big news!!!!!!!

I brought Preppy Puppy home 3 weeks ago!!!! Yall will just melt when you see her. She is absolutely precious. I will post pictures and tell you the story about how I found her tomorrow!

Glad to be back in the blogging world, and I have a ton of catching up to do!

So, I am supposed to be moving at 10AM tomorrow morning... please check out this mess that I have created. It looks like someone puked pink and green all over my apartment. Please pray that I can keep my sanity through this move! Hopefully it will be my last one for a VERY long time!

I saw these the last time that I was at Target, and they are just too cute for the price!! 50 cards for $20 is too good of a deal! Even though you have to do some of the work yourself, they do have a template, which should make the work a little easier. Looking at the online reviews, everyone was really pleased with how they turned out. Just an idea you members of the Preppy Preggo Club! You can use the main card for the picture and then the small card for the little one's new name, birth weight, etc.
I am thinking about using the pink and green one for a party invitation and using the little card as an RSVP card.

My wonderful and faithful follower and friend in real life, M, sent me this article about a week ago and I thought I would share it with you all. It was published in the Wall Street Journal, which in my opinion makes it legit!

Bloggers for Hire

In America today, there are almost as many people making their living as bloggers as there are lawyers. Already more Americans are making their primary income from posting their opinions than Americans working as computer programmers or firefighters.

Paid bloggers fit just about every definition of a microtrend: Their ranks have grown dramatically over the years, blogging is an important social and cultural movement that people care passionately about, and the number of people doing it for at least some income is approaching 1% of American adults.

The best studies we can find say we are a nation of over 20 million bloggers, with 1.7 million profiting from the work, and 452,000 of those using blogging as their primary source of income. That's almost 2 million Americans getting paid by the word, the post, or the click -- whether on their site or someone else's. And that's nearly half a million of whom it can be said, as Bob Dylan did of Hurricane Carter: "It's my work he'd say, I do it for pay."

Microtrends

Forget about huge, sweeping megaforces. The biggest trends today are micro: small, under-the-radar patterns of behavior which take on real power when propelled by modern communications and an increasingly independent-minded population. In the U.S., one percent of the nation, or three million people, can create new markets for a business, spark a social movement, or produce political change. This column is about identifying these important new niches, and acting on that knowledge.

This could make us the most noisily opinionated nation on earth. The Information Age has spawned many new professions, but blogging could well be the one with the most profound effect on our culture. If journalists were the Fourth Estate, bloggers are becoming the Fifth Estate.

What started as a discussion forum for progressive politics and new technologies has now been applied to motherhood, health care, the arts, fashion, dentistry -- and just about every other imaginable area of life. What started as a hobby and an outlet for volunteers is becoming big business for newly emerging sites, for companies that now depend upon their reviews and for the people who work in this new industry.

All this fits with the trend toward Opinion TV. Less and less of our information flow is devoted to gathering facts, and more and more is going toward popularizing opinion. Twenty-four-hour news channels have been replaced by 24-hour opinion channels. The chatter is the story.

Demographically, bloggers are extremely well educated: three out of every four are college graduates. Most are white males reporting above-average incomes. One out of three young people reports blogging, but bloggers who do it for a living successfully are 2% of bloggers overall. It takes about 100,000 unique visitors a month to generate an income of $75,000 a year. Bloggers can get $75 to $200 for a good post, and some even serve as "spokesbloggers" -- paid by advertisers to blog about products. As a job with zero commuting, blogging could be one of the most environmentally friendly jobs around -- but it can also be quite profitable. For sites at the top, the returns can be substantial. At some point the value of the Huffington Post will no doubt pass the value of the Washington Post.

The barriers to entry couldn't be lower. Most bloggers for hire pay $80 to get started, do it for about 35 months, and make a few hundred dollars. But a subgroup of these bloggers are the true professionals who work at corporations, serve as highly paid blogging consultants or write for sites with substantial traffic.

Pros who work for companies are typically paid $45,000 to $90,000 a year for their blogging. One percent make over $200,000. And they report long hours -- 50 to 60 hours a week.

As bloggers have increased in numbers, the number of journalists has significantly declined. In Washington alone, there are now 79% fewer DC-based employees of major newspapers than there were just few years ago. At the same time, Washington is easily the most blogged-about city in America, if not the world.

Almost no blogging is by subscription; rather, it owes it economic model to on-line advertising. Bloggers make money if their consumers click the ads on their sites. Some sites even pay writers by the click, which is of course a system that promotes sensationalism, or doing whatever it takes to get noticed.

The United Kingdom has just had a major scandal in which an official at 10 Downing Street had planned to leak to a friendly blogger all sorts of lurid stories about the Conservatives, complete with descriptions of secret sex tapes. But all of it was to be made up, and the friendly blogger who was going to post it all thought it was an "absolutely brilliant" idea. Someone blew the whistle, but had the plot gone through, this blogstorm could have played a major role in the upcoming election.

As a political pollster, I always observed that the poll that often got the most coverage was the one that was different from the others, regardless of whether it was right, or whether the pollster had any track record. This is true with opinions, too: those on the extreme right or left, or those that are the most titillating, seem to drive the most traffic through their sites. The center doesn't seem to have either the edge or the passion to grab the same kind of traffic.

The implications of bloggers for hire are substantial. While many bloggers probably support unionization in general, they have no union of their own. Most have no benefits, yet they work long hours in front of computer screens which could cause a variety of health ailments. And the owners of the big sites most often pay their bloggers as freelancers, avoiding all of those taxes and benefits that newspapers have to pay for their writers.

For now, bloggers say they are overwhelmingly happy in their work, reporting high job satisfaction. But what happens if they, too, lose work; are they covered by unemployment insurance if tastes change and their sites go under? Are they considered journalists under shield laws? Are they subject to libel suits? Are there any limits to the opinions they churn out, or any standards to rein them in? Is there someone to complain to about false blogs or hidden conflicts? At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Panasonic outfitted bloggers with free Panasonic equipment; did that affect their opinions about the companies they wrote about? There are more questions than answers about America's Newest Profession.

It is hard to think of another job category that has grown so quickly and become such a force in society without having any tests, degrees, or regulation of virtually any kind. Courses on blogging are now cropping up, and we can't be far away from the Columbia School of Bloggerism. There is a lot of interest now in Twittering and Facebooking -- but those venues don't offer the career opportunities of blogging. Not since eBay opened its doors have so many been able to sit at their computer screens and make some money, or even make a whole living.

And with millions of human-hours now going into writing and recording opinion, we have to wonder whether being the blogging capital of the world will help America compete in the global economy. Maybe all this self-criticism will propel us forward by putting us on the right track and helping us choose the right products. Maybe it will create a resurgence in the art of writing and writing courses. Or serve as a safety net for out of work professionals in the crisis. But for how long can nearly 500,000 people who are gradually replacing whole swaths of journalists survive with no worker protections, no enforced ethics codes, limited standards, and, for most , no formal training? Even the "Wild West" eventually became just the "West."

Mark Penn Responds:

People have raised questions about the calculations on the numbers of bloggers for hire. First, I was surprised at how few studies there are on this and I believe there definitely should be more. So perhaps in the future I will do some original research, but for this piece we took the best we could find and referenced every number so people would know where they came from.

There is no question that the blogosphere, fast-growing as it is, has yet to nail down one way to measure itself or gauge its activity. But the most comprehensive sources we could find, conducted by reputable professionals, say there are over 22 million bloggers out there; and that 2% of bloggers are making their living blogging. Do the math, and you get roughly 450,000. It's a fast-growing group and we ignore their needs, and influence, at our peril.

As far as the $75,000, the Technorati report says that of those bloggers who had 100,000 or more unique visitors, the average income is $75,000. True, it's not the median, but it is the average. We can quibble about how easy it is to make this kind of money -- but the point is, the huge potential is there.

Here are some further details on the sources and calculations:

The Technorati Poll -- The methodology stipulates that in order to qualify for the survey, Technorati "state of the blogosphere" respondents needed to be bloggers over 18 years old. The survey was hosted by Decipher Inc., was in the field from July 28, 2008 through August 4, 2008, and received 1,290 completed responses from 66 countries. Survey design and analysis was conducted by Dr. Michele Madansky and Polly Arenberg. Dr. Michele Madansky runs a media and market research consultancy specializing in online media and Internet startups. From 2003 to 2007, Michele was vice president of global market research for Yahoo! Polly Arenberg is a marketing strategist with more than 20 years of experience; her clients include Yahoo!, Microsoft and Flickr, as well as numerous start-ups.

The 2% of bloggers making a living comes straight from the Technorati Poll. The total number of bloggers--22.6 million--is supported by a research report from eMarketer (2% of 22,6 million is 452,000). This report was written in May 2008 by Paul Verna, a senior analyst there: "The Blogosphere report aggregates the latest data from marketing and communications researchers with eMarketer analysis to provide the information you need to make smart, accurate business decisions."

The question of how much traffic it takes to make a living also comes from the Technorati report. We say it takes "about 100,000 unique visitors a month to generate an income of $75,000 a year" and Technorati states those who had 100,000 or more unique visitors the average income is $75,000

Copper Mountain Caramel Cake

What better of a recipe that combines my favorite C foods... chocolate, caramel, and Cool Whip!?! This is the latest recipe that I have baked, and I thought I would share it with yall! It would be perfect for entertaining a crowd for a BBQ or pool party this summer. My sorority little sister's mom gave me the recipe after I raved about it. We both have enjoyed snacking on it this last week!

Copper Mountain Caramel Cake

Ingredients:

1 box German Chocolate Cake (and the other ingredients to prepare that cake according to the box's directions)
1 12 1/4 oz jar caramel topping
1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 12 oz container Cool Whip
4 Heath bars (regular size)

Directions:

1. Make cake according to box directions and pour into 9x13" greased pan.

2. While warm pierce with fork (I use a large meet fork).

3. Mix caramel topping with condensed milk and pour over cake (I make sure to pour slowly and allow some of it to seep in the cake, instead of dumping the whole bowl).

4. Refrigerate (I waited about 2 hours).

5. Frost with Cool Whip and sprinkle crushed Heath Bars on top.

mmmmm... It is ready to eat!!!!!

As school is winding down, so are the days that my honors thesis is due. Thank goodness I will be out of town for the original due date so my professor extended the time that I could turn it in!!! Now I have an extra weekend to finalize everything. To give you a brief summary of it, I am writing about how the media has portrayed and affected the behaviors of Queen Elizabeth II. It really is amazing to see what had been published about her and to see her reactions. Mostly, I am honing in on the change in her emotions pre and post Diana's death. This was the time that most greatly changed the way the Queen's attitudes and emotions were displayed to the public.

If you are interested in learning more about QEII, I have 2 excellent recommendations. First you should read the book Monarch by Robert Lacey. It is a quick read and would be a great book to throw in the beach tote this summer.

Next, you should watch the movie The Queen. As soon as I saw this movie in theater, I knew that I would have to buy it when it came out. It focuses in on the Queen and the rest of the family during Diana's death. I thought it was historically accurate is most senses and they also incorporated actually new footage from the event. Even if you are not interested in QEII, you will love to watch Helen Mirren who does an outstanding job with the role!

The Great Debate: Satellite v. Cable

I am moving in 2 weeks, and I am trying to get all of my ducks in a row. Shopping for cable and satellite is not nearly as easy as I though it would be. There are a lot of deals out right now, but it is really hard to cypher the differences between the two.

I really need yall's advice on this one. Cable seems to be the more expensive option, but I know that it is more reliable than the dish. But I can get more channels from satellite and free equipment. Have any of you had good or bad experiences with either of these companies?? I think I am leaning towards getting satellite because of the difference in the number of channels (plus I get HBO and a few other movie channels for free over 3 months). Plus, they are very upfront with you on the pricing, unlike Comcast whose website is a nightmare to figure information out.

Potted Plant Arrangement

My grandmother did this arrangement for our Easter celebration. This arrangement gave a very grand appearance to the center of the buffet table for a fraction of what cut flowers would have cost. The cool thing about using potted plants, instead of fresh cut, is that it can be less expensive and they last much longer. She got this wire flower tower from a local interior design shop, but you can find them at gardening centers as well.

One of the tips that she said is to include plenty of greenery. This gives the arrangement a fresh, spring look. My favorite were the bright green baby ferns that are on the 2nd and 4th layers.

Also, in order to cover up the pots, you can use spanish moss, or any other kind of moss, around the outer edges of the wire rack.

Another idea that I heard recently for bridal showers...

They arranged a large pot with potted plants in the center of the table, which was later given to the couple to plant at their new home. Smaller arrangement were put into terracotta pots and disperse throughout the house. These were the guest's party favor at the end of the day! Another way that you can use potted plants as a less expensive option for entertaining!

My Near Death Experience

... and what you can learn from it!

Sometimes I like to post about happenings in my life, and I feel like I have to tell you all about my near death experience this weekend. This story should prove to you why it is CRUCIAL to have your tires checked often. I used to think that it wasn't that important; but after this experience, I will not be going out on the road without double checking them.

My friend and I were on our way back to school from Easter break. It was getting to be late at night (10ish) and she was too tired to drive so I took over the wheel. Her car drives very differently from mine and vibrates constantly. She assured me that this was normal, but I knew that it shouldn't be. I lost control of the vehicle at 70 mph and swerved off the side of the highway. Thinking that we had just had a flat tire, I look out on my side to notice that the bumper is hanging on the ground!! Here is what we found...

Yes, at first we thought that someone had swerved into us and hit the bumper... but that was not the case. After calling a guy friend that was only 10 miles ahead of us (THANK THE LORD!), he turned around to come to our aid. We were able to make it off the side of the highway and to a gas station were we could better evaluate the situation.

The conclusion was made that our accident had been cause by improper tire care. The entire tread to the back tire is sitting on the highway somewhere in Nashville right now! I am sure you are wondering how we limped back to school?! Well... we had a full spare, so we changed that. Then we needed to address the bumper issue. Duct tape is one of the single best inventions. Check out our body work... and the tape even blends in with the paint color! ha!

Now for the moral of the story. Here is an article that I found from Popular Mechanics on the top 5 reasons that your tires could fail. Please make sure to have your tires maintained and properly inflated so that you don't have to almost loose a bumper (or something worse!).

As the old TV commercial says, there's a lot riding on your tires. Indeed, tires could well be the most important system on your vehicle, given that they affect every performance parameter from handling and acceleration to braking and ride comfort. So it's no surprise that maintenance on your tires should command as much respect, if not more, than on all the other parts and systems of your car. Trouble is, most drivers just don't think about the condition of their tires. As I've mentioned before in discussing the whole Barack Obama tire inflation thing, a Department of Transportation study dating back to 2001 features some pretty eye-popping numbers: 60 to 80 percent of cars on the road are running tires underinflated by as much as 10 percent, 20 to 50 percent of them are driving with tires down in pressure by as much as 20 percent, and 10 to 30 percent of these cars have tires with pressure as low as 30 percent of the recommended pressure. Underinflation is just one reason a tire can fail. Here are four more. —Mike Allen

1. They're Old

Check the tire sidewall for the manufacturer's date code. It will be in the form of a four-digit number, stating the month and year the tire was produced. Unfortunately, there's no equivalent to an expiration date. And it's not a good idea to install tires on your vehicle that have been sitting on a warehouse shelf for many years. A decent rule of thumb is not to purchase tires more than five years old. And five years in service on your vehicle is plenty, totaling 10 years. Your mileage may vary.

2. They're Underinflated

Tires that have too little pressure in them run hot—much hotter than properly inflated ones. The pressure in the tire keeps the tread and sidewalls from flexing. Friction from this flexing generates heat, and that degrades the rubber and the fabric construction of the tire. And don't be fooled by the appearance of the tires. It's impossible to see if your tires are underinflated without using a tire pressure gauge. The proper pressures are printed on a sticker on the driver's door frame or inside the glovebox. They are also in the owner's manual.

3. They're Overinflated

The tire inflation pressures printed on the tire sidewall are the tire manufacturer's maximum permitted pressure, not necessarily what the vehicle manufacturer recommends. Overinflated tires will have poor grip, and the tread will wear prematurely in the center.

4. They're Deteriorated

Ozone, road chemicals and ultraviolet light degrade the rubber. But this is probably more of a problem for RV and trailer tires mounted on vehicles that are stored outside in the sun, especially in the Southwest. Tire covers will keep the UV rays at bay longer. Avoid ozone damage by not storing unused tires near any ozone sources like electrical equipment or motors, pool chemicals or the like—especially indoors. Tire sidewall rubber is permeated with oils that are designed to leach out slowly and protect the rubber. Detergents or aftermarket protectants will remove these oils prematurely. A certain amount of weather-checking (alligator-like cracks in the sidewalls) is normal. If the cracks are down to the fabric sidewall plies, it's time to retire that tire.

5. They're Damaged

Any foreign object that penetrates the tire far enough to cause a leak is sufficient reason to require the tire to be removed from the rim and inspected by a tire technician for damage to the inside of the carcass. An externally applied plug or worm should be considered a temporary repair. A proper repair involves patching the tire from the inside with a plug that not only holds air but prevents water from infiltrating into the carcass's belt plies. Water in this part of the tire will make it weaker. It's not really possible to repair a tire sidewall.

My Preppy Easter Egg Tree!!

Here are the pictures yall have been waiting for! I could not have been happier with the way that it turned out. I do admit that it does look a little different from Martha's tree, but it has a fun college spin on the traditional. Anyone recognize that tree?! Yes, I recycled my Christmas tree! This project was so much fun, and I think that even little children could have fun with it. Not only was it simple to make, but the result really brightens up any Spring home!

I found these little chicks at the checkout at Michael's yesterday (for around a dollar), and I just could resist. They are nestled throughout the tree an just give it a little bit of whimsy. These are the best upclose picture of the actual finished eggs. You can see that the holes don't even show at all (yes, the perfectionist in me was worried about that)!

Of course, I had to finish it off with a big hot pink bow! Although... the craft store kind of ripped me off. I got home and the ribbon had been cut about a yard from the end and stapled back together?! No clue what happened there but the bow turned out to be fine with only 2 yards.

Here are my ribbon choices. Originally, I was just going to do pink and green; but I decided that it would look really cute with all of the spring colors. I would make sure to use at least 5 different ribbon choices so that it adds enough variety to your tree. Also, the yellow ribbon (50 cent kind from the craft store) you will probably need more than one spool. To make the tie you just loop the ribbon around 4 of your fingers and tie a knot. Then tie a little bow. I cut the ends of the ribbon on a diagonal to add a little visual interest. You will hot glue the bow to the egg and then hang by the loop. To attach the ribbon around your egg, I just used hot glue on both ends and made sure that the ribbon was tight and straight around the egg.

This was the first batch of blown eggs (notice the ones missing?! they went to chocolate chip cookies!). I had to go back to the grocery when I realized that this many eggs would only decorate one side of my tree! Just make that you make the top hole fairly small and that the bottom hole punch allows all the "guts" of the egg to come out. Also, I used a paper clip to break the shell, and it worked just fine.

Decorating Easter Eggs

Since, I am not quite finished with my Egg Tree, I thought I would share some ways that you can decorate your own Easter eggs. I was amazed at how many fun things that I found at the craft store to decorate eggs. It's not just about the dye anymore! All kinds of things can be used to jazz up your eggs!

Here are some ideas that I found from one of my favorite sites... All Recipes!

Flower Vase Egg

Use a blown egg; dye desired shade. Gently expand opening at the top of the egg; glue a small flat rock to the bottom as a base. Hide glue seam with ribbon or beaded chain. Use hot glue to affix silk flower into eggshell--flower should just peeking out the top of the egg.

Dot Egg

As simple as it gets: pick your dot color and place tiny dot stickers on a white or dyed egg.

Flower Power Egg

Dye egg. Use glue gun to attach flower sequins in a matching color (red on red, blue on blue).

Royal Egg

Dye egg. With glue gun, attach large and small necklace fasteners to add a royal touch.

Charm Egg

Dye egg desired shade; glue ribbon around its middle. Insert small tag or charm in blow hole and affix with hot glue gun. (The charm in this egg says, "Thank You!")

Disco Egg

Dye and dry a blown egg. Dilute craft glue with an equal amount of water and paint on egg. Roll in superfine glitter and let dry.

Chick Egg

Broken eggshell? Don't throw it away: dye the entire shell. With a hot glue gun, affix fuzzy chick figurine inside.

Word Egg

Die-cut stickers come in many different word themes. Mix and match words and themes to cover a plain egg.

Bedazzled Egg

Beads aren't just for clothes anymore! Dye egg in a bright color; glue faceted bedazzle beads in rows on half of the egg.

Bumpy Egg

Using a hot glue gun, place glue dots all over egg. Let dry, then dye.

Time to Get Crafty

For those of you that keep up with my blog, you know that I love decorating for holidays! Not only does it spice up your life, but it is also a fun way to change the look of your house in a small way. I came across this Egg Tree on Martha's website and I knew that I would have to make it my own. So I am devoting today to making a preppy Easter egg tree. Here is what I am using as my inspiration...

From Martha

In Germany and Austria, it's customary to celebrate Easter by hanging hollow eggs from the branches of trees. This year, bring the tradition indoors by creating a unique display for your blown and decorated eggs.

Fill an ice bucket with floral foam, then insert grass and pussy willow branches. Or place pebbles and water into a vase, and make an arrangement using any type of fresh-cut branches, such as flowering quince, magnolia, forsythia or cherry blossom.

To thread and hang the eggs, center a slipknot on a length of ribbon, and thread the ribbon ends through a large-eyed needle (or fashion a needle by folding a 12-inch length of 27-gauge wire in half; use the loop end to thread ribbon). Gently pass the needle through the holes at each end of the egg, and pull ribbon through. Before inserting the needle, decide which end of the egg will be the bottom; the hole from which the ribbon ends protrude will be the top of your egg. Double-knot the ribbon above and below the egg, then tie the loose ends to a branch with a bow.

I am a firm believer that you can never own too many polo shirts. Recently, I discovered that one of my favorite companies, Southern Proper, now carries women's polos!! This is pretty much my exact "uniform" for both work and play!

Retailing at $59.50, these would be a great addition to any wardrobe. There are tons of colors in the men's line, but bere are the colors that are available in women's.

I am currently contemplating between which to choose... I have all of these colors in my closet already, but I think my navy is looking a little dingy (because I wear it all the time!) so I may start there!

Stationary Swap: Part Uno

Yesterday, I received the most wonderfully, bight swap package ever. Thanks to Lou Lou in Lilly for hosting such a fun swap, and my incredible swap partner Kate from Nautical by Nature for the AMAZING package!

The blog world never ceases to amaze me! Kate knew how much I love to spend time in the kitchen, entertaining, my favorite colors, and even incorporates Lilly into the package. Look at what all she sent!

On less a less fun note, you have probably noticed that I have been more absent that usual recently. I promise it has not been by choice! With the first day of April being tomorrow, I am in the home stretch of college. This semester is my last attempt to redeem my grades to be able to graduate cum laude. In order to do that, I must maintain a 4.0 in all of my 14 hours. Well, the stress of this situation has begun to take a toll on me. In past semesters, I would have been fine with making an 88 on a difficult exam. Now, I am constantly feeling inadequate about my work, unless it is perfect. In the long run, it probably will not matter whether I graduated cum laude; but it sure would look nice on a resume ;) Hopefully things will calm down very soon with school and I will be able to devote more time to my blogging. I just wanted to let you know why there has been a lack of posting and commenting. Thanks for understanding!!

Founder's Day

This weekend had been filled with both sorority and school. Yesterday, we had a lovely brunch in honor of our sorority's founders. Our chapter and alumni dined on breakfast casserole, hashbrown casserole, french toast, ham, muffins, bagels, fruit, etc. It made me realize how much I miss Sunday brunch after church! Not only did we reflect back on our heritage; but the seniors were acknowledged, as well as academic awards were presents. I was lucky enough to be recognized in both of those categories.

For the seniors, they had our little sisters get up and read letters from our parents. I thought I would share what my mother wrote. (Preface: I was rush chairman and my little sister was the recommendations chair, so we were able to get to share being in charge of recruitment. That was definately a bonding experience like none other!! Not only are we best friends, but our mothers and families are friends as well.)

Dear Lilly P. Wannabe,

Here you are at another milestone, your graduation from college. How proud Dad and I are of your many accomplishments in both school and [your sorority]! How I loved being with you and your sisters during Rush week 2 years ago! [Little Sister's Mom] and I sat on the cooler in the kitchen during the parties taking turns peeping out the shutters seeing you and [your sorority] shine! Enjoy Today!

Thank goodness my mother did not write one of the tear jerkers... I didn't wear waterproof mascara! The entire day made me look back on my experience and truly realize how special it was and how different life would have been without being in my sorority. It is also customary for the chapter to present the senoirs with gifts. We got monogrammed aprons!!! And the icing on the cake is that mine is accented with pink and green ribbon :) They know me all too well!

Lastly, they recognized the scholastic achievements of the chapter. There were 5 of us that receieved 4.0's last semester, and we were presented with our Lamp of Knowledge. I was so excited! It took me until the end of my college career to get straight A's. This little addition made me start thinking that I want to make a charm bracelet. I think I am going to get the charms for Rush Chairman and Recommendation Chairman (I was that the year before). Then turn my pin into a charm, and add the lamp of knowledge too.

I am off to read more legal briefs on execution (fun subject, I know!), and put my new apron to use. I am debating between making homemade (of course!) brownies, chocolate chip cookies, or cake during my next reading break.

My Pair Tree

Now that it is flip flop weather, it is time to figure out what to do with all of those shoes that all us preppies are addicted to. I was using one of those plastic shoe holders from Target; but when I spotted this on The Today Show yesterday, I knew that I needed to own [at least] one! What makes this flip flop tree even better?! You get to pick out the grosgrain patten!! Look at all the choices...

I'm back from a 2 week hiatus

Oh girls, I am not even sure where to begin on filling you in!! The last that you heard from me I was getting ready to leave for NYC. It was by far one of the highlights of my life. G and I had an amazing time getting to meet you all that were there and we have many memories that will last a lifetime. We spent all 3 days painting the town pink and soaking in all the sights and sounds. My first time to the city did not disappoint. We made sure to stop by Dorrian's and Serendipity [thanks to Preppy 50 and Loving Lilly], hang out in Time Square and Rockefeller Center, all while shopping along the way! Thanks to Hopsy for hosting such a wonderful gathering! Now I can put so many names to the faces, which was quite a thrill for me.

The Martha taping truly felt like a dream! I have never been that pumped up about something. The Lilly and Martha teams did a wonderful job with the segments and our goodies. Too bad that the show hasn't reaired yet, but thank goodness for DVR! Seeing yourself on the big screen is shocking. All I have to say is I am heading to the taning bed and will be attempting to cut out the sweets ;) They do say that the camera adds 20 lbs?! I am not sure how much other bloggers have posted but here are some of the photos of the taping and following events...

After a wonderful time in NY, we had many difficulties getting back to school, so I skipped making it back to Knoxville. This was the point in time where I headed straight to the farm to spend the entire week by myself... ok well not exactly, I had 12 horses to keep me company! SB down at the farm was beyond relaxing. I spent some quality time with my favorite guys (the horses), and ate plenty of junk food (not like I didn't have enough of that in NY!). It was the best way to kick back and relax and I even got a little work done! On another note, Spring has arrived, and I busted out a few new spring pieces in the mix. We hosted a horse show yesterday and it hit 75 degrees which proved to be the perfect climate for both horse and riders. I was parading around in some J.Crew white capri and a cute Lilly tunic. But, here is a picture of the farm after some fog had settled in... I'm not going to lie, it was kinda spooky!

So now I am back in the real world, aka school. After having missed a week I have much catching up to do (in more ways than one). There are only 5 weeks of classes left, which means that I am on the home stretch of college! Now I need to focus on a test I am making up tomorrow and I am going to attempt to catch up on some blogging and see what yall have been up to.

Was there a full moon this weekend?!

I had what I would like to call an "interesting" weekend. One night in particular stood out from the rest. On Saturday I decided to go out with one of the girls from my class to the annual fraternity boxing tournament. It is a HUGE deal. All the girls get really dressed up and the guys sit with their fraternity. Anyways, this was my first year to go because I have been out of town at horse shows, so I didn't know what to expect. I must say that I was disappointed, except for the fact that I looked really cute :) This was pretty much confirmed by the story that I am about to tell...

The night started out very normal. We went to grab some dinner and then made our way over to the tournament. I was amazed that people would pay $15 per night to get in the door to be miserably hot. Everyone in the place was sweating profusely which I found to be highly unattractive. The "fighting" was not even amusing at all. Yes, I had fun seeing everyone that I know, but still... it was disappointing.

Things really started to get interesting when we made it out to the bars. Yet again, I saw everyone that I knew, but since I was hanging out with a new person I got to meet some of her friends as well! We sat down at a table of 4 [very good looking] guys that she happened to know. It turns out that I was from the same hometown as 2 of them, so we had a lot to talk about. While I was sitting there talking to them, another [gross, hot, sweaty] guy came up to the table and start rubbing all over me! EXCUSE ME!? Somehow we managed to fend off Creeper #1.

I continued to talk to one of the [really nice, awesome] guys until the bar closed and it was time for us to head to our next destination. Now, Creeper #2 came into the picture during the first car ride. He flat out turned to me and said "so when are we going to make out?" EXCUSE ME!? Considering I had no clue who this guy was and didn't even know his name, that was not in my plans for the evening. I was polite and said "no thanks".

We hung out at a friend's house for a little bit, when Creeper #3 hit on me in the 2nd car ride. Want to know the best part of this dude... he is married!! EXCUSE ME?! No thank you! I am not a homewrecker.

So then to top off my weekend, I wake up with an unidentified rash... that has turned out to be something that I picked up from the boxing tournament! My pharmacist loved when I started out the conversation with... "Well, I went to this fraternity boxing tournament last night and I woke up with this?!" He laughed and gave me some cream. And I cracked my phone after having dropped it one to many times. Now I am going to have a ghetto phone until August when I get another upgrade.

After this whole long, drawn out post... I never heard back from the guy that I talked to all night, and I was definitely interested in hearing back from him, since he was the one, non-creeper of the entire night! Oh well, better luck next time :) I was still flattered by all the attention!

Martha/Lilly Sneak Peek!

A little birdie gave me some insight as to what we will be doing on the show! The Martha/Lilly Pulitzer Show will be featuring a special fashion show. As well as, we will be working on a vintage-inspired straw-flower craft and vibrant floral arrangements. What a fabulous line up for the show?!

Then you must tune in to watch Martha personally walking through the how-to of our uniquely Lilly process! As if that weren’t reason enough to watch, we will be showing off some of our favorite must-run-out-and-gets from the Spring collection in a mini fashion show. "

Chocolate Lovers Only

I was in search for a fabulous new chocolate recipe to bake for a friend's birthday when I came across this goody. These cookies are absolutely scrumptious! Any chocolate lover needs to add this recipe to their collection. I added semi-sweet chocolate chips this time, but I am going to try it with white chocolate chips next! I altered the recipe that I originally found here. Just make sure that you have a cold glass of milk waiting!

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In large bowl, beat butter and both sugars until light and fluffy.
Add eggs and vanilla.
Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until well blended. Mix in the chocolate chips and walnuts.
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Make sure to flatten the cookies to about 1/2 thick before placing in the oven.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or just until set. Cool slightly on the cookie sheets before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. [Note: mine took the entire 10 minutes.]

As previously posted we had a "Throwdown for the Hometown" mixer this week. I am amazed to see how many people from both my sorority and the fraternity were from the country! All that plaid and denim made my head spin ;)

Thanks to tray chic, I decided to dress as "the blues." My first plan was to go as a pig and be BBQ, but I thought this was much cuter! I had a sign that said "Welcome to Memphis: Home of the Blues" but it got lost as soon as we made it to the bar. Oops! All my sorority sisters danced the night away and sang karaoke. I didn't want to break any glass, so I stayed away from the microphone. Plus, I was too busy dancing!

The reason why I really wanted to go to this mixer was to talk to a guy from my class that is absolutely precious [is that ok to call a guy that?!]. I was hoping "liquid courage" would help me get up the nerves to talk about him. Nope... but he did sit next to me in class the next day!

Here is a glimpse of my outfit straight out of the dirty clothes hamper... ha!

I already had the dress and the necklace, so I headed to Walmart to find the accessories. They have a wonderful assortment of colors in these leggings right now. They were so comfy, and only set me back $5! Then I made the headband with the coordinating ribbon.

I promise I will post the instructions on how to make these custom headbands after I get back from class!!

Martha is One Week Away!

Also, I thought I would go ahead and unveil what I am planning on wearing to the show. I do apologize for the pictures... I promise the outfit looks much cuter on ;) I believe that the dress is circa 2004. I know that my grandmother purchased for me as part of my high school graduation trousseau (along with about 1o or 15 other Lilly pieces!). Thank goodness for a Lilly loving grandmother! This dress has been one of those "go to" pieces when you feel like your having a "fat" or "blah" day, I would wear this and feel better.

My outfit will be complete with the grosgrain ribbon accent cardigan from Lilly, gold flats, and pearls. I cannot believe that it is just one week away! Good luck in the drawing!

My mom sent me this picture that overlooks our deck and pool house, and I cannot remember the last time that we got that much snow at home. Too bad Knoxville missed out on all the fun! What have I been doing?

Well, the better question would be "what should have I been doing?" I have a big paper due tomorrow and I have not even started it! I am the procrastinator extraordinaire. So after sleeping in, watching Father of the Bride Part I, eating lunch, browsing the internet, and blogging, I will finally be able to start this thing [hopefully].

Today is the first day of March, which means that I will be graduating in 2 months and 8 days!! It is so hard to believe. I realized that my moving date is in 2 months and 9 days! I have absolutely no idea how I am going to be able to furnish an entire house. All I know is that I am taking my bed from home and my TV and that is about it!

Browsing the internet, I was searching for ideas on how to decorate and furnish your first place. I found a website that a lot of ideas including furniture made out of Fedex boxes. Apparently, Fedex sent their lawyers after the guy that created the original website so it is no longer available, but here are some of the pictures.

Okay, so I am a pretty creative person. Even though I would never make my furniture out of boxes, surely I can come up with something?! Over spring break, I am going to go to some estate sales and start harrassing my relatives to see what I can come up with. Somehow, I walk in to Target looking for one thing and I come out with 6 things. And did I mention that did not include what I went in for? Too bad they didn't have any gold sandals! Moral to the story... I absolutely cannot go to Target without making a stop at the dollar section. You can find some of the cutest seasonal item or just little happy's.

Preppy Puppy has not even made it home yet and he/she is already going to be outfitted in pink and green! I could not believe it when I found this collar and matching lead in the dollar bins. What a great buy?!

Then I also found these cute little pails that can house anything from pens to candy to flowers. I went ahead and got four and used two of them to organize stuff on my desk. I just thought that they would be handy to have around. It is sometimes hard to find places for little things to live! They would also be the perfect compliment to Easter decorations or a table setting.

Mardi Gras: LPW Edition

This post is a shout out to my fabulous friend M, with whom I have spent many fun and crazy moments with!! After moving away from Memphis during middle school, she became a NOLA resident. One of my favorite memories from high school was my "college visit" to Tulane that "magically" occurred during Mardi Gras week. We hopped from house party to parade to krewe balls all week long. Somehow, we managed to party to the LSU frat boys AND live to tell the tale! Anyways, I wish that I could have been down there again this year to celebrate, but this darn test on Tuesday really cramped my style!

So this is what I decided to do to celebrate the week! I made my very first homemade king cake! First, let me warn you that this is not for the faint of heart. Also, the recipe calls for a HEAVY DUTY mixer -- ex. KitchenAid Stand Mixer -- and they really mean it. Yes, I had to learn this the hard way. Also, I would recommend not making this if you are not in good shape. Seriously, my abs and arms are still aching from kneeding the dough yesterday! I kept thinking that at least I was burning off some of the calories I was about to eat. With all the warnings having been said... let's proceed to the recipe!

Southern Living's King Cake

Yield: 2 cakes

Ingredients:

1 (16-ounce) container sour cream
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 (1/4-ounce) envelopes active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water (100° to 110°)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
6 to 6 1/2 cups bread flour (you can also use all-purpose, but the cake will be denser)

You will need to choose one of the two filling options!

Filling Option 1

1/3 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Filling Option 2

3/4 cup sugar
2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Creamy Glaze -- not optional :)

3 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 to 4 tablespoons milk
Decorating sugars

Directions:

1. Cook first 4 ingredients in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring often, until butter melts. Set aside, and cool mixture to 100° to 110°.

2. Stir together yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1 tablespoon sugar in a 1-cup glass measuring cup; let stand 5 minutes.

[Watching yeast activate is actually pretty interesting!]

3. Beat sour cream mixture, yeast mixture, eggs, and 2 cups flour at medium speed with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer until smooth. Reduce speed to low, and gradually add enough remaining flour (4 to 4 1/2 cups) until a soft dough forms.

[This became known as plan B. I almost burned up my roommate's hand mixer, so I turned to the Cuisinart with a bread attachment. I will NOT be making this recipe again, until I get a HEAVY DUTY stand mixer like the recipe calls for ;) but the recipe turned out okay so I guess you could use a food processor with the special attachment instead.]

4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes). Place in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease top.

5. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 1 hour or until dough is doubled in bulk.

6. Punch down dough, and divide in half. Roll each portion into a 22- x 12-inch rectangle.

7. Filling Option 1: Spread 1/3 cup softened butter evenly on each rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border. Stir together 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle evenly over butter on each rectangle.

Filling Option 2 (this is what I did): Beat 3/4 cup sugar; 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened; 1 large egg; and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Spread cream cheese mixture evenly on each dough rectangle, leaving 1-inch borders.

[mmmm... the best part is getting to lick the spoon!]

[I used a measuring tape to make sure that my dough was rolled out to the correct dimensions.]

8. Roll up each dough rectangle, jelly-roll fashion, starting at 1 long side. Place one dough roll, seam side down, on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bring ends of roll together to form an oval ring, moistening and pinching edges together to seal. Repeat with second dough roll.

[Make sure to roll tightly and evenly!]

9. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 20 to 30 minutes or until doubled in bulk.

[This is what it looks like after it has proofed again and is ready for the oven.]

10. Bake at 375° for 14 to 16 minutes or until golden. Slightly cool cakes on pans on wire racks (about 10 minutes).

[This is what it looks like after it came out of the oven. I should have let it cook a little longer so that the inside would have been completely cook. So, the cake should be golden brown --> brown.]

11. Make glaze. Stir together first 4 glaze ingredients. Stir in 2 tablespoons milk, adding additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until spreading consistency.

[I used a whisk to combine all of the ingredients. Also, it took a good amount more milk than the recipe called for to even get it to be spreadable.]

12. Drizzle Creamy Glaze evenly over warm cakes; sprinkle with colored sugars, alternating colors and forming bands. Let cool completely.

[I was so excited to find these pink and green sprinkles on the baking aisle! It wasn't until after I had put them on the cake that I realized that they are watermelon flavored! Oh well... it still tasted good!]

Studying the Law

LPW has been studying the law in more ways than one this week. I am enrolled in an American Legal System class where my professors noted on the first day of class, "we will be going over material in one semester that takes law students 3 years to cover." Okay, so I was a little intimidated. Now that we are two months in the class I have a better understanding of the history and structure of the legal system.

Here's the kicker... we have the first of our 2 tests on Tuesday. Yes, you heard me right. Our entire grade is based off of 2 exams!! That means that I have to knock this exam out of the park to make an A in the class. So, in turn, I have locked myself in the apartment this weekend in order to prepare myself. Thank goodness I am studying with a friend on Sunday, and then attending a study session on Monday. These extra efforts will hopefully pay off in the end. I know that this class is preparing me for law school, and I do enjoy the subject matter that we are covering!

On to the other side of law that I have been studying. This kind is much more personal and very distressing to all parties involved. There is a case in my hometown where the daughter is accused of having stabbed her mother more than 50 times. This occurred 3 1/2 years ago when she was only 18. She has finally made it to trial, which has occured over the last 11 days. Today will be the closing arguments, then the case will be handed over to the jury. It is amazing to me how modern technology has allowed me to keep up with the trial by both blogging and live video feed. I ending up knowing a lot of her friends that were forced to testify against her. I can't remember if I ever met her, but I know that we had a good number of mutual friends/acquaintances. I pray that God will take care of her no matter what the verdict is. I am sure she is a totally different person now, then she was when the incident happened. Watching this case, reinforced to me that I DO NOT want to go into any type of criminal law.

This case made me realize how important growing up in a stable, loving household is. I guess I just always took for granted the way that I was raised. Have any of you ever had a case that just really touched or reached out to you?

I got my first pearl necklace at the age of 6 that were given to be as a gift for being a flower girl. I have been in love with pearls ever since. For my 18th birthday my parents gave me the most beautiful strand of Tiffany pearls. For graduation, my grandmother gave me the David Yurman pearl cable bracelet. This was later followed by a bracelet that my mom had designed from my late grandmother's pearls. For my 21st birthday, my parents gave me a David Yurman pearl ring. Pearls have been involved in all kinds of special occasions for me.

Every Prep Loves Monograms

I thought that these wire message boards are really cute over the desk. Even if your name isn't short, you could always do your monogram. At a price of $15 each, I thought they are a bargain! You can find them at Pottery Barn Teens. Too bad I don't have any wall space left in my room...

My brother made it home from the hospital today, and he is doing well. Mom said they gave him some good pain medication, and he slept the day away. He is going to have a cast put on on Monday, and my vote is that he get a red and blue one for Ole Miss! I was originally going to suggest orange, but I knew he would cringe ;)

Please Pray for My Brother

My brother is headed to the OR tomorrow to have pins and rods placed in his arm. He had an accident this weekend that resulted in the tip of his wrist being broken. The first doctor he saw was not sure of the severity of the break, so he needed to see a specialist that confirmed he would need surgery.

I know that my mom is really stressed out because of this. Poor thing... my dad had his hip replaced last year and I had 2 surgeries on my shoulder the year before. She has had to nurse all of us back to health, I know that it is starting to take a toll on her sanity (which was fragile to begin with). My mom worries about absolutely everything... and when I say EVERYTHING I really mean it. Honestly, I have no idea how her nerve endings still function. I have never been a mom, so I really don't know how it feels; but I still think that I won't sweat the small stuff like she does.

I know that everything is going to be just fine in the end. I remember feeling so relieved when I finally had my surgery. Even though the pain is slightly worse after surgery, you feel so much better! He has had to live with the pain for 4 days, so I know that he is ready for it to be over with. Anyways, just keep B and my family in your thoughts and prayers.

mmmm... Rum Cake!

Our sorority has a "Fraternity of the Month" where we honor the guys that have done an activity or had a mixer with us or just have been really nice to our girls. So each month after we vote, I bust out the bakeware to make some yummy treats. This month we are honoring ATO because we have a mixer with them this Wednesday. These guy are super nice and are truly fun to hang out with. Immediately when I found out that we were baking for them, rum cake was the first thing that came to mind!

I thought I would share my recipe with yall. It is in the oven as I am sitting here; and literally, I cannot wait to have a bite!

Cake Ingredients:

1 box yellow cake mix
1 3.5 oz package of instant vanilla pudding
4 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup dark rum**
1/2 cup water
1 cup chopped pecans (optional... since this is going to the boys, I am not spending $7 on nuts!)

**NOTE: Use a decent dark rum!! You will be able to tell the difference between the cheap stuff and the real stuff.

Cake Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degress.
Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan or Bundt pan.
Sprinkle nuts evenly over the bottom of the pan.
Combine all of the above ingredients (except nuts) and blend until well incorporated. Place in the pan.
Bake for 1 hour and allow to cool in the pan.
Invert onto plane and prick the top of the cake with a skewer.
Drizzle and smooth glaze evenly over top and sides. Allow cake to absorb glaze and repeat until glaze is all used up.

Glaze Ingredients:

1 stick butter
1/4 cup water
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup dark rum

Glaze Directions:

Melt butter in saucepan.
Stir in water and sugar.
Boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in rum.

I had one of the most wonderful Valentine's Days. Originally, I was going to go out to dinner with a friend then meet up with some people to go out to the bars. After realizing that I do that all the time, I decided to have a relaxing Saturday!

LPW is headed to NYC to meet Martha!!!! This e-mail was by far the best Valentine's gift a girl could ask for. I cannot wait to see the entire audience dressed in Lilly! All I can think about is what I am going to wear and what kind of segments they are going to talk about. Who knows... maybe LILLY herself will make an appearance?!?!?!

Hopefully my professors will understand that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to go to this, and they will have to let me reschedule the 2 exams I will be missing. I have never been to NY before, but this will have to be a quick trip. Too bad they couldn't have scheduled it during my Spring Break, which is the very next week!

There was only one person that I could think of that would appreciate a Lilly/Martha experience like this one. So I called G to tell her the fabulous news, and she was totally up for it! G is as obsessed with Lilly as I am, and she often displays her Martha abilities. I knew that she would be the perfect person to go with.

PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE, professors, let me go!!!!!!!!! Maybe my pleading will eventually hit a nerve with them :) Now, does anyone have any ideas of where to stay and where to go eat??

What Do Adult Valentines Look Like?

Here is a sneak peek of what I will be doing tomorrow!! Since the little valentines in a box and wrapped candy won't do anymore, I decided to get creative. I have a fabulous sugar cookie recipe that I will use along with colored icings. I thought about making them look like the conversation hearts... who knows?!

I created these little tags on Powerpoint and printed them out on cardstock. I am then going to glue them to construction paper and tie on with curling ribbon.

I am posting in between a huge test that I just took (hopefully it went better than I think) and getting ready for Out-of-Date Date Party. Sorry, I have been such a bad reader these last few days, but this week has been really hectic. I promise I will catch up towards the end of the week :)

As for Valentine's week, dipped strawberries are a great tradition. I saw this bakery on The Today Show or Food Network at some point in time, and I have been really curious to try them ever since.

These are not only dipped, but they are stuffed with some of your favorite dessert foods. The Eminger Berries look absolutely delectable! Here are some of the ones I am coveting...

Cupcake

The cupcake berries are whimsical & fun. I once had a cupcake candle that made me want to throw a birthday party every day! The berries are stuffed with vanilla cake and sugary frosting. They are dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with the multi-colored sprinkles we grew to love as children.

Margarita Key Lime

The margarita key lime berries are a perfect light and refreshing escape. They are filled with freshly baked & chilled key lime pie. This pie has tequila, triple sec, and hinted salty undertones (no substantial alcohol quantities). They are dipped in premium white chocolate, with a dusting of toasted coconut & gram.

Cookie Dough

The cookie dough stuffed strawberries were one of the first I created. As a chef, I watched countless associates snag chunks of my cookie dough as I baked. It's true, that when I presented a cookie dough stuffed berry to a co-worker, she commented "ooh... these make you feel dirty!" They're very intense. Cookie dough berries are dipped in light chocolate, accented with mini chocolate chips. The dough is, of course, chocolate chip.

Créme Brulee

The créme brulee stuffed strawberries are filled with triple cream custard. This center has a vanilla accent. The caramelized brown sugar is lightly crumpled within the custard. The stuffed strawberries are dipped in white chocolate. They are gently sprinkled with crushed caramelized brown sugar.

Cheesecake

The cheesecake stuffed strawberries are filled with rich & creamy New York cheesecake. This center has a vanilla accent. The graham cracker crust is crushed into the cheesecake filling. It is a real cheesecake... fit into the middle of the berry. Cheesecake stuffed strawberries are dipped in dark chocolate. They have elegant white chocolate petals on either side. The bottom is dipped in graham. This is the berry that was featured on the Food Network!

UPDATE: oops... apparently, I breezed over the home page and didn't realize that they are not in business any more!! I guess I am going to have to attempt to make these on my own!

You can make your own dipped strawberries by buying the best strawberries you can find and white or dark almond bark. Wash the strawberries well then make sure that you pat them dry. Warm the almond bark over a double boiler or in the microwave, and dip away!

So after talking about these yummy treats, I am starting to get hungry... I am off to cook dinner!

Unfortunately Flowers Eventually Die

I absolutely love to receive flowers, even though they are gone in about a week or two. Every year for my birthday in college, my mom sent me a bouquet of pink, green, and yellow flowers. She also made sure to tell the florist to include roses, gerber daises, and tulips which are all my favorites. Little gestures like this really mean a lot. I believe that you don't have to go out and spend a fortune on flowers if you include a few of the favorites, and then some less expensive "fillers."

So, I am not one of those people that will be having flowers delivered to myself; BUT, if I were to receive flower for Valentines Day, I would rather have pink flowers (or at least a bouquet, with some pink!). Some guys don't really understand the giving of flowers because they are too practical, but there is nothing like coming home to bright bouquet of floral smelling flowers :)

Here are some tips for keeping your Valentine's flowers alive longer:

Make sure that they have plenty of water at all times.
Change the water at least once a day. This is one of the most important steps.
Add a little bit of Sprite to the water, or use the flower food.
When a flower looks like it is dying, go ahead and take it out of the bouquet.
If you receive flowers that have not been arranged, make sure to cut the stems underneath water before placing them in the vase.

I promise that I will try not to refer to it as "Singles Awareness Day" too often :) I have actually never celebrated Valentine's Day, but I love to hear about everyone else's plans! As of now, my plans include champagne and chocolate (that is if I have any single girlfriends that are up to that).

Bring on the Sweets

I could pretty much eat anything that is sweet; but for some reason, I swear that candy tastes better around a holiday.

It is not Valentine's Day without the Necco Conversation Hearts. They are simply sugary sweet. The main thing about these little guys is you cannot let them get stale... yuck!

Need I say more?! Cousins to the Reese's peanut butter cups, these goodies have much more peanut butter! Along with the Reese's eggs for Easter, I cannot wait for these to get into stores.
Boxed chocolates is to Valentine's Day like cake is to a birthday. LPW's favorite chocolates are from the Dinstuhl's Fine Candy Company in Memphis. Their cremes and caramels are to die for!

He's Just Not That Into You

The only way that I can describe this movie is that it is one of the most uplifting and depressing movies at the same time. I read the book a number of years ago, and have passed it around to many girlfriends in need. The movie has a slightly different message than I felt the book was intended to carry; but with that said, I highly enjoyed it.

My mom saw it last night with my grandmother and said that it was definitely geared towards people my age. I agree with this statement, but everyone can get something out of seeing this movie. It looked like the guys in the theater enjoyed it just as much as the girls. I would be interested in hearing their side of the story!

I guess it hit closer to home for me since I am single. Even though I don't feel like I fit in any of the categories of the girl characters, there was lessons that I came away with from each of the situations. Mainly, you need to be able to take risks. I am not in any shape or form a risk taker. But, I feel like I may have a new attitude when I go out tonight, and I am going to try to reach outside of my comfort level when talking to new people. I'll let you know if it helps :)

I think it was a really good movie that will have you thinking about your current relationship or any future ones. Hope you all have a wonderful Saturday. Maybe I will meet Mr. Right tonight?!

With the economy being the way that it is, I have really tried to save more than I spend (remember the new year's resolutions?!). Then again, I am related to my grandmother which means I cannot pass up a good deal.

This cute pink sweater is really similar to anther Lilly sweater I have that I wear all the time over dresses and tops. So with that in mind, I knew this piece would get a lot of us. Retail was $188.00 and I got it for $59.99.

Oh but of course I couldn't stop there! I tried on a pair of Lilly black pants that were extremely comfortable when I realized I don't own any black pants! Every girl needs a pair of black pants, right?! Retail was $198.00 and I got it for $63.19.

As I was swiping my card, I was kidding with the sales people (of course they know me by name, and I am sure they think "cha ching" every time I walk in). I said when I couldn't eat this week because of this purchase I was blaming them. The cute lady from Romania responded, "we didn't have Ramen in Romania so we would eat ketchup when we spent our food money on clothes." After being severely grossed out I said, "I would eat Ramen noodles so that I could shop more, but then I wouldn't be able to fit in my clothes!!" This statement is so true. I don't know how college kids live off of all that sodium!

The 90's Called...

...and asked for their wind suits back! We are having an "Out-of-Date" Date Party for my sorority, and I had to think of something original. I swear I can remember my mom wearing wind suits very similar to this when she played tennis and picked up carpool. Too bad she didn't save any of them... I had to go to the Thrift Store to find these goodies! They have the zip legs and all!

I cannot wait for Fabulous Roomie and I to get to wear these! I think our dates are going to find ones that are a little less obnoxious, but they were just as excited as we are :) I am taking one of my best friends from high school. He has been the date extrodinaire for all occasions, from sorority dress up parties to deb balls.

Finding these was like a blast from the past, and it made me think back to everything that I loved and missed about the 90's. All of the wonderful music, middle school, fads like Beanie babies and Furby... the list could go on and on! I would love to hear some of yall's favorite memories, fads, or items from the 90's!

Chasing Harry Winston

I just got finished with this fun read by Lauren Weisberger! Many of you encouraged me to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Although, I have to say that it was a little slow in the beginning, it quickly became hard to put down. There were twists and turns at every point. Some you could see coming, while others you could not. Overall, it was the uplifting tale of three girls struggle with men and life. Whether you are single or in a relationship, you will be able to appreciate this story.

Hi everyone! I am back from my Baltimore trip with many new ideas for our business and sore feet. The convention center might as well have owned its own zip code, but our trade show went really well. The weather cooperated, until I made it back to Knoxville where there was a nice blanket of snow!! School still hasn't been canceled, but I am hoping they will decide in the morning that the roads are too slick. No class would be really nice ;)

The New Year's Resolutions are still intact!

For once in my lifetime, I am doing pretty well with my New Year's Resolutions. I thought I would fill you in since it has been almost a month since I swore I would change my ways! If you need refreshing on my NYR's, please check out this post.

I have been doing my best on the organization front. Some of my new tactic do include some pink and green finds, including these precious file folders that I found at T.J. Maxx the other day for $2 for a set of 10 (continue to read to see how I am doing on controlling the shopping). My closet is the most organized that I have ever seen it. I have everything color coded! And last but not least, I have started using my iCal calendar, which has proven to be invaluable. I always know where I am supposed to be when. Here is a little preview of my organized desk...

As for losing weight... I don't think that I have done that well with that one. BUT I have not relied on fast food nearly as much as I used to, and my diet has included much more fruits and vegetables. Oh and I have actually been working out a little here and there. Overall, I am feeling better and making healthier decision, minus the Lofthouse cookies that are sitting in my pantry! What I am struggling with the most is my addiction to Diet Coke. I know that it causes you to retain water weight. I must have at least 2 or 3 cans a day or I transform from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde! Please fill me in if you have any tips on how to cut the caffeine cravings!

On the job front... I don't officially start until May, but they have me doing a lot of pre-planning. I have kept up with the the work load pretty well, and it makes me get more excited every day. I thank God constantly that I have a stable job to go to right after graduation. In this economy, I know that it is becoming a rare find.

Last, and certainly one of the hardest NYR's to keep up with is my shopping addiction. I have done EXTREMELY well with this one. As you have seen on the blog, occasionally I will pick up some inexpensive happy's, but that doesn't break the bank account. I finally convinced myself that I do not need anything else to put on my body and that includes shoes (there is a post in the works for that situation). I want to keep the junk (oops... I mean things) to a minimal because I will have to schlep it away from here at the beginning of May. Yes, it is hard to resist the sales right now; but I have managed to control myself fairly well.

I never stop being amazed at how clever crooks are. They have now figured out how to use simple technology against you! My sorority sister just sent this to me, and I thought I would pass it along to yall!

GPS

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they wereat a football match. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently
mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear th at they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

MOBILE PHONE

I never thought of this.......
This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... Etc...was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad , Mom, etc....

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.

Grograin Ribbon Accents

Inspired by everyone's craftiness, I decided to show you a preppy solution to a problem I had. My favorite shopaholic shower curtain shows window displays from different countries, so Tokyo has kimonos in the window, London has Burberry plaids, Paris has lingerie, New York has trench coats, etc. etc. I found it for our freshman dorm and have enjoyed it ever since. Unfortunately, it was ripped off the rod by a past Evil Roomie (can you believe that people are that mean?!). This action resulted in multiple holes for the shower curtain rings being broken, ultimately keeping it from being able to hang. :( I was determined to figure out a way to bring it back to life AND make it look cuter than it did originally.

Off to Michael's I went... and I came back with a roll of Ultra Stitch Witch and 2 rolls of black polka dot ribbon. Here is what the final product turned out looking like!

I used the thick ribbon to fold over either side of the top, and made sure to Stitch Witch both sides really well. Then I was able to hang it back on the rod, but I still felt like it needed a little something extra. This is where the thinner coordinating polka dot ribbon came in handy. I just knotted this ribbon onto the shower curtain rings, and let them dangle naturally.

After I got finished with this project, I decided that my bathroom clock was looking a little bland. I decided to use the leftover thick ribbon to add a bow accent. All I did was tie the ribbon in a bow and hot glue the ends to the back of the clock. I then hung the clock with a nail, and attached the bow to the wall with 3-M Poster Tape.

P.S. -- If you don't have a clock in your bathroom, you will be amazed at how it helps you get out the door on time. I am notorious for taking a long showers and completely loosing track of time. This way, my clock is right outside the shower; and I can gauge exactly how much time I have to get ready.

I need help from people that travel!!

I am leaving to go on a business trip this week, and I am having a slight problem with luggage. The only piece of rolling luggage that I own is a hot pink bag that I have had since the 7th grade. It has always served its purpose, because it is easy to spot at luggage claim! Now that I am entering the real world, since the pink is not really "business-like" I was thinking that it is time to trade it in for something new!

Most of the time, I will be going out of town for only 2-3 days at a time, so I am thinking that carry on size would be the best. Also, since they have started to charge for checking luggage, that would save a few dollars here and there.

So here is what I am thinking... my Vera Bradley collection is this pink and brown pansy pattern. I would like whatever I find to coordinate, since I will be carrying these pieces together a lot. Espresso brown seems to be the most logical answer, because it will not get dirty and is still different enough from the black, navy, and hunter luggage everyone else has.

Here is what I found at TJ Maxx for around $50 each. I'm not sure if I can get away with the 25" size for carry on, but I know that the bottom two are the right size.

The small one on the right caught my attention with the blue lining (which matches the blue on my Vera Bradley pattern). I know all this really doesn't matter in the end, but it is nice when things match! Let me know what you think I should go with; or if you can think of a better option, I am all ears!

The Search for Preppy Puppy Continues

I am sure many of you remember the cute Jack Russell/Shih Tzu mix that I found in November. Well, I didn't end up getting it. After much debate, I am leaning towards getting a big dog. I grew up with big dogs, and I was afraid of stepping all over a little creature.

I was watching the Today Show on Friday, and they were talking about the most popular AKC breeds. You can check out their segment on the top puppies here. As usual, the Labrador Retriever topped the list off.

I absolutely love my black lab, Hunter, that lives at my parent's home. We rescued him from the local animal shelter; but we swear that he is full blooded, because he has the most beautiful block head. So now I am leaning towards getting another boy black lab. Not only are they snuggly, but he will be able to go running with me. And best of all, when I live in the new house, he can scare away the big, bad wolves (hehe)!

I have started to look on Petfinder, and there are plenty of labs to adopt. If you are interested in adopting, you can check out The Today Show's tips. I found two that look really promising, but one is in Kentucky and the other is in Georgia. With that kind of distance, I am hoping one will come up that is a little closer! I would love to snuggle with this little guy!

Adoption can be such a daunting task. Some of the shelters will not allow out of state adoptions, while other require a home visit that would make it impossible. I downloaded some of the applications and you would be amazed at what they ask you. A veterinary reference I can understand, but do they really need to know my income?! I know that all of the hassle will be worth it!

I cannot wait to welcome Preppy Puppy home, and let him wear his new Lilly P. collar!

Aren't the Weekends for Relaxing?!

I hate how house work piles up over the week, and the weekend is the only time to get it done!! Seriously... I have been avoiding doing laundry for 2 weeks and as you can see, I need to do it (this was only one of the piles!).

Five loads later, it is all done and put back in its place.

I have got to stop changing clothes so many times! It never fails that I will wake up and go to class in one outfit, change to go workout, and then change again to go out at night. One of my resolutions is to make an effort to stop the vicious cycle, and to not wait until I have to do a million loads. We will see how that pans out.

Still on the list of things to do is clean the kitchen and vacuum. Yucky! I am so not cut out to be a housewife. Maybe one day I will earn enough money to hire a housekeeper. We had one when I was growing up and she was basically part of the family. When I came to college it was a little bit of a shock when I had to do my own laundry and clean my room, but it has gotten much easier over the years.

My roommate sophomore year gave this to me... at first I think it offended me, but now I can laugh at it because it is so true! It hangs out behind my sink, and all my guy friends get a kick out of it. Call me high maintenance if you want, but cleaning is not my forte!

Back to housework I go! Hope yall are having an amazing weekend!

PINK SWAP!

Today both my partner and I received our packages from Kappa Prep's Pink Swap! What a way to start the weekend... it was such a treat to have a present waiting on me when I got home from school! THANK YOU CONSTANCE!!

Here is what she sent me...

It is all TOO CUTE!! I already put a picture of my BF and I in pink outfits in the frame. The cross is hanging over my door bedroom so that I can be blessed every time I leave! Also, I am waiting to put the luggage tags on my new luggage (please check back later this week to help... I have got to find luggage for a trip next weekend). And I am saving the bath mat for the new house... my shower curtain is a white waffle weave with a large pink monogram, so it will match perfectly (not to mention all of my pink towels)!! Oh and I loved the note she sent with it. It is the gerber daisey, which is my favorite flower!

Here is the package that I sent her...

I went with a theme for her package... including all things for the kitchen! I love the grapefruit soap and lotion from Williams-Sonoma, so I had to include that in there. Then the rest of the things were fun finds from Target including: pink and green dish towels, a pink heart kitchen towel, green scrubbers. pink and green dish gloves, and pink and green sponges, and the pink tub. I just could help but include a good amount of green in her package... it's just in my nature!! haha!

Vineyard Vines is second in line behind my obsession for Lilly. This really wasn't helped when a Vineyard Vines store opened up in my backyard. If you have never been to one of their stores, you really should! It is a whole new experience! I got this email this morning, and I am thinking this might be a really good excuse to make a VV purchase!

Is it too early to start decorating?

So I am not moving to my first house until May; but after seeing Target's new ad campaign, I really want to start decorating it now. Some of my favorite items are the woven natural rug and their kitchen bar stools. After seeing this collection, I am leaning towards having a blue and brown dining room (maybe with zebra print accessories). Anyways, it is fun to start thinking what my new house is going to look like!

Sorry that I have been MIA for a few days. I made the long haul back to the farm this weekend to get some work done and managed to squeeze in a nice long trail ride! I haven't been on a horse in 3 weeks, and let me tell you... my butt was sore the next day!

Here is one of my latest shopping finds that made me happy. It is a hand painted terracotta pot, that sits on top of the Lilly look-a-like pants. I have this nifty ledge on my bathroom mirror that now houses my find... I am thinking it will hold my makeup brushes.

Lilly P. Placemats

I got these lovely Lilly P. placemats for Christmas one year, and I have never used them because I didn't have napkins that matched. Now that is not the case, thanks to a recent trip to Tuesday Morning!! I found these pink, green, blue, and purple napkins that match my place mats perfectly!

I was thinking that I would use the pink and green napkins with the blue side, and the pink and blue napkins with the green side.

What I can't decide is whether or not I should get the napkins monogrammed. If I do get them done, what thread color should I use?

I just love what Lilly P. has to say on the back of the placemat box...

My 50th Post!

School is AMAZING!! I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love my new classes. I get to have one of my favorite political science professors for the fourth time for a seminar, and I am learning tons in the American Law class. Both of my horse classes keep reminding me that you can never know everything about something (even if you have been studying it for over 10 years). Lastly, communications will be easy; but I know that I need to hone my presentation skills. You can never be too good at public speaking!

The closest book to me is What Would Jackie Do? My mom always gets me some fun books for Christmas, and this is one of them. I haven't done more than flip through it but here is a little glimpse.

Boy Update

There is an update on Guy Friend... I ran into him this weekend for the first time since the crazy night over Christmas Break.

My roommate and I were walking into a bar when the first thing I notice was GF (are you noticing a trend?!). Of course, I booked it towards the bar (ignoring him) so that I can attempt to get some liquid courage before having to face reality.

After mingling around for a bit, I decided that I would be a big girl and face him. I walked up to the table and started talking to some of the girls he was sitting with, while he got up to talk to other people. Eventually, I made my way over and started the short conversation.

He really didn't say too much except for "he is going to rekindle the relationships he lost last semester, now that his 'alcoholic' roommate has moved out." I found it quite ironic that he blamed his roommate for his lack of communication with me. What does that have to do with anything?!

What I find to be even more ironic is that I ran into his roommate over Christmas break after I saw GF and his sister. I bluntly asked him what the deal was and he stated that GF had mentioned something about me liking him... guys are so self-centered! GF's roomie told me not to worry about anything GF said or did and to realize that I am an awesome person and friend (that made me feel better).

Oh and did I mention that GF promised to call and we would hang out soon?! 2 days later and it still hasn't happened. I am starting to think that our friendship has died.

Jubilee Scarf

Lilly always comes out with some fun scarfs. The Jubilee scarf has 50th and Lilly hidden in the patterns. I have one of the breast cancer scarfs that I wear as a belt because it is long and narrow, and I was thinking this one would make a really nice pillow. It's always fun to find new uses for ordinary objects.

Fast and Easy Chicken and Rice Casserole

Two things make it very hard to cook dinner when you are in college. First, you are on a tight budget which requires getting creative with less expensive ingredients. Also, when you are making dinner you are usually cooking for one. Although I figured out how to make that one easier... My roommate and I which off cooking during the week, so that we can cook for two and maybe have some leftovers for lunch. We don't cook on Monday because that is when our sorority meeting is, so we rely on take out or Lean Cuisine those nights. We look at our calendars and decide who can cook on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Friday and Saturday are up for grabs depending on what is going on and who is going out of town. In the end, this makes it a lot easier because you only have to cook half the time. It has also made it to where we can afford to cook nicer meals more frequently than if we were both cooking every night.

Okay, so here is where I was going with this post... I am always on the lookout for recipes that are quick, easy, and feed around between 2 to 4 people. Here is the most recent trial that I did this week. It is from the back of the Cream of Chicken soup can. It was so yummy!!

From: Campbell's Kitchen

Prep: 15 minutes
Bake: 50 minutes
Stand: 10 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup (Regular or 98% Fat Free)
1 1/3 cups water
3/4 cup uncooked regular long-grain white rice
1/2 tsp. onion powder (I substituted Mrs. Dash's Lemon Pepper for this and the pepper, then I sprinkled it on the top of the chicken also)
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
2 cups frozen mixed vegetables (I used half green peas and half carrots, celery, and onions)
4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts halves
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Directions:

Heat the oven to 375°F. Stir the soup, water, rice, onion powder, black pepper and vegetables in a 2-quart shallow baking dish.

Top with the chicken. Season the chicken as desired. Cover the baking dish.

Bake for 50 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the rice is tender. Top with the cheese. Let the casserole stand for 10 minutes. Stir the rice before serving.

A Colorful Getaway

For all of you that are jet setting down to Palm Beach for the winter (that is on my agenda for next year, but it will be for work)... here is the collection for you. The collection is comprised of mainly beach wear that would be appropriate for Spring Break, weekends at the beach, etc.

My top pick from the Getaway collection is the Pillar Tunic; and to be honest, I couldn't decide which pattern I like better. The design looks similar to a oxford shirt dress that can be flattering on all shapes and sizes. Not to mention, at $138, it is a bargain for true Lilly fashion.

I made it back to Knoxville safe and sound, despite the massive amount of rain that poured from the sky the entire time I was driving. Today was the first day of my last semester at UT. It is hard to believe that after 7 semesters, this is the beginning of the end. Thank goodness my schedule is pretty laid back so that I can finish with strong grades, and hopefully senioritis won't set in too early on.

Sunglasses Anyone?

I cannot live without sunglasses! Mainly, I go for the huge Jackie O ones. Not only are they classy, but they actually serve the intended purpose to keep the light out. Since my last sunglasses purchase was in August (BCBG's), I think it is about time to treat myself to a new pair.

But I have a confession to make... I did not go to the Lilly store the WHOLE time that I was home!! Partially because I knew that I shouldn't be spending a lot of money and partially because there was no time. That means that I haven't had a chance to see the new sunglasses line. I can't wait for them to appear on the web!

Has anyone seen them yet? Is there a pair that you are dying to own?

Cocktails for Three

I absolutely love to read "chick lit" as most people call it. Unfortunately, with school commitments, I don't get to read as much as I used to. Thank goodness, I was able to sneak in a quick read over the Christmas break. Last night I finished Cocktails For Three by Madeleine Wickham. It is an enjoyable book that shows the ups and downs of friendships and growing older. The book has the same feel as her other books, the Shopaholic Series, which I am addicted to! I found Cocktails for Three to be uplifting, while showing the importance of having a core group of girl friends.

Since my team (cough, cough) didn't make it to a bowl game this year, I was forced to cheer for the opposition. As many of you know, my family are huge Ole Miss fans... so it was natural for me to want them to win the Cotton Bowl.

And win they did!! I could not believe it. I saw the score at the end of the first quarter (Ole Miss - 0, Texas Tech - 14) and really did not think they had a chance, but they proved everyone wrong. Sometimes the underdog really can get the job done!! My brother will be on his way home from Dallas tomorrow, and I cannot wait to hear his recollection of it all.

Hope all of your teams won! Sorry Alabama fans!

New Year's Resolutions

As the new year comes in with a bang, there are a few resolutions that I am going to attempt to uphold.

I would like to be more organized. Organization has never been one of my strengths, but it is possible for people to turn over a new leaf?! Honestly... I found this and wish it was in my closet!!

So the college lifestyle has started to catch up with me... I could stand to lose a little bit of weight. Maybe I will hit the gym a few more times and cut out the sweets!

I am going to give 150 percent at my new job that I will start in May. One letter of recommendation may make my admission to law school!

I am going to attempt to keep my shopping in line... I mean I never thought you could own too much Lilly. Now I have so many clothes and not enough room in my closet! Plus, it would be nice to save a little bit of money.

These are the biggest resolutions that I am going to really try to keep up with. Achievable goals are one of the most important aspects to keep in mind when considering how to set your own goals. I have never been a big resolutions person; but now that I am about to enter the adult world, now would be a good time to start.

We are headed down to the Peabody Hotel for their New Year's Eve Party. I haven't been to it in 3 years so I am excited to get all dolled up and see everyone. May all of you have a happy and safe New Year's. I look forward to 2009 and all it has to bring!

Busy with Work = Bad Blogger

Sorry everyone, I promise that I have not fallen off the face of the planet. Things have been especially hectic around the farm. We have been trying to schedule our entire year for 2009, which is quite a task. I promise I will try to be better about staying on top of my blogging :)

Thanks to all of the wonderful ladies that have left me awards. I am working on those at the moment, and I am hoping to have them posted by the first of the year.

It is truly hard to believe that 2008 is almost over. I remember the older girls in my sorority telling me that time passes faster the older you get. With the blink of an eye, I am one semester away from being done with college. The good news is that I officially have a job lined up... as of earlier this afternoon. So with this new year, I look forward to opening a new chapter of my life with my move to the Delta region of Mississippi!

It is 2:15PM my time and I am just getting out of bed. Last night I went to a Tacky Christmas Sweater Party (this is only the third one this year), and we stayed out all night long.

So this afternoon I wake up to the sound of my 2 black labs howling. I continued to ignore them until it was just too much. Looking out the window, I see that the UPS man is running down my driveway away from my house. Yay! I knew that he must have left something for us and that was what caused the commotion from the dogs (they are not too fond of the UPS man or the dry cleaner's delivery). A small white box appeared on our front steps... looking at the address label I knew what was in the package before I even opened it.

Every year, our attorney's firm sends us a box of mixed goodies from Ricki's Cookie Corner. When I say that these are melt in your mouth... they are incredible!! We look forward to receiving these every year. Their cookie tins make wonderful gifts, or you could just order one for yourself. Just make sure that you include the Chipstick in your order. These are the best cookies that I have every tasted!

It's Cotillion Time in TN

I know all of us look forward to wearing the white dress on our special day, but I have to say that wearing a white dress for a debutante ball is just as fun! Both sister and I have been presented in numerous events over the past years. Since my years as a debutante are over, it was sister's turn to take the spotlight. The event was held at the historic Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis, where you have never seen Christmas decorations like these! Every time I attend this event, it puts me in the Christmas spirit (as if I didn't have enough of that already).

Sister's dress has the modern wedding cake look. She changes the look up a little bit every time she wears it with a different sash/ribbon. The first time she wore it, she had a white sash, knotted in the front with a beautiful pearl and diamond broach (on loan from grandmother). The second time she change up her look by using a different broach and choosing some different jewelry. This time, she accented her dress with a champange colored ribbon that was tied in a bow in the back. You can truly make one dress look so different by changing up little parts of it.

LPW was not as creative with her dress. I found one that compliments my pear shape without making me look like a double-wide (thank goodness... I was worried about that!). This is not my exact dress but it is close to the design. My mom wanted us to find a dress that didn't look too "weddingy." Try finding a wedding dress that doesn't look like it belongs in a wedding... I dare you! We looked forever to find something that pleased mom, sister, and me!

If you are looking for a deb dress or a wedding dress and you live in the South... GO TO BRINKLEY, ARKANSAS. Random... I know! Low's Bridal Shop is infamous. I went there during their semi-annual sale and got my dress for a fraction of what it was originally priced. Their selection is amazing. You can try on at least 200 dresses in your size. I can assure you... we were there for hours!

Being a debutante was truly special for me. I loved it more and more, every time that I did it! Sister and I are lucky that we were choosen by wonderful organizations to represent them. We were even luckier to be blessed with great escorts (that part is almost more important than the dress). They have to be photogenic for the pictures, have great dancing skills, not get too intoxicated so that they embarrass you, and most of all they must be a gentleman (especially to be able to talk to all the parents). Good gracious... thinking about it, we were lucky to find anyone that fit that description!

Crazy Night!

Here is a glimpse into my personal life. I haven't really touched that area yet...

Last night was one of the most bizarre nights. I had been to a cocktail party, and later decided to head downtown with one of my best friends from UT. We showed up at the first bar and met up with two of our guy friends that we were planning on spending the rest of the evening with. Please keep in mind that it was 30 degrees outside (cold by the South's standards) and I was dresses to the nines with one of my best new dresses (without a jacket). I got many compliments on my outfit (this really has nothing to do with the story... sorry)!

Background to the situation... I have some AMAZING guy friends! They are honestly some of my best friends that I can count on for anything. One guy friend in particular started to stand out from the rest. I met him Freshman year, but we really started hanging out Sophomore year when we lived next door to each other. We ended up working together Junior year. Guy Friend and I were pretty much inseperable since we moved next door. Needless to say, things start to get expected of a guy/girl relationship after a certain point. Both of our families, a lot of our friends, and even our boss were convinced that we would start dating... but we always denied the allegations. So after all the pressure of our relationship began to make things a little awkward, he stopped talking to me completely! I guess one day he woke up and decided that he was never going to talk to me again! I tried to call, left him 1 or 2 voicemails, and even texted him... no response. My mother even called him to make sure that everything was okay and to invite him to our tailgate... still no response. After 2 months, I finally saw him out one night, and I cannot say that I was the nicest person to him. I think the term "giving him the cold shoulder" would have been an understatement.

Okay, so hopefully you got the gist of the situation and I'm back to the story... We decided to leave the first bar after the crowd started to thin and head to the infamous late night hangout. Of course, the first person I see after walking in the door is Guy Friend (from now on we will be referred to him as GF). He takes one look at me and heads in the other direction! I now knew that my wonderful night had been ruined.

I continue to walk through the crowded bar to be greeted next by GF's sister. The first thing she said to me (I am not lying... this was before she said hello) is that I was going to be her sister-in-law! Wasn't expecting that comment. My immediate response was "did you know that I have literally talked to your brother once in the last 2 month?!" She had no idea!! Still, she continued to tell the whole bar, and all of our friends her plan for GF and I to get married. I asked her if GF was even aware of her idea and this was her reply: "HE SAID HE IS AFRAID THAT HE CAN'T AFFORD YOU." So I am definately not what I would consider high maitenence; but come on now, Lilly and beauty doesn't come cheap! So is he not talking to me because he wants to be with me but thinks that I'm too high maintenece?!

I guess he did consider dating me, but I have never even considered that being an option, no matter how close of friends we were. Over the course of time, he had dropped some little hints that made me wonder, but it was always after we had been drinking and none of them were very serious. Although one night, he made me cross my heart and hope to die that if we were both not married by the time we were 30-35ish then we would marry each other. I laughed, took it as a compliment, and had never really thought about it again (until now).

So, now I am in a connundrum on how to handle the situation... GF still won't talk to me and now his sister is running around telling people that we are getting married. All I have to say is it was one crazy night! And the moral to this story is that you should always be looking your best when you run into ex's/enemies/people that won't speak to you/etc. because at least you feel confident in yourself. I am determined that he will come to his senses one day and at least say hello to me next time!

Christmas is About Making it Your Own

I am sure most Southern ladies can associate with this post. Southern Proper is such a fun company that has really embraced the lifestyle of Southern men. This email was in my inbox this morning, and it reminded me of a gift that my aunt gave my brother for Christmas one year. Both my dad and brother are avid hunters. Around this time of year, they would spend all of their time in the woods if my mother allowed them to. Knowing this, my aunt (who is incredibly creative) made my brother a strand of shotgun shell Christmas lights. As you all know, I attempt to make my Christmas as pink and green as possible. My aunt gave him something that would make his Christmas a little more personal as well. It just made me think that the holidays are about making it special and adapting your decorations to your lifestyle. So here is just a little idea for all those Southern beaus who have everything. And if you don't think you could make a strand, here is where you can buy them!

Bath Organization

I am in no way, shape, or form any where near as organized as I need to be. Seriously, I have made huge strides in recent years, but I still lack the organizational skills that are required to keep my massive amount of "stuff" in its appropriate home. This year, I purchased two large baskets that have worked pretty well to organize my bathroom. One keeps all of my makeup on my vanity, while the other keeps all of my hair products and larger bottles on a different shelf. Still, I felt like I could use a little more organization in this department...

Shopping online one day, I spotted this cute make up organizer from PB Teen that had a matching console for all of your hair accessories (hair dryer, straightener, etc.). I decided to wait and see if I could find anything better/less expensive. Of course, I kind of forgot about these organizers until I went back on the PB Teen website and realized they were gone! Don't you hate it when you miss out on something when it sells out?!So I was on the hunt again! Here is the closest thing that I could find from the Container Store. This organizer will work just as well as the PB one, plus I have acrylic cotton ball and Q-tip holders that will match. I guess it all worked out in the end, but I am still a little disappointed about the white one.

If you are interested... PB Teen has the smaller version of the make-up organizer in a pretty light blue that is still available. Too bad it doesn't match my color scheme!
